looking for His will, His way

“Dear Santa, I want a little sister for Christmas!” Who knew a scribbled note on a torn piece of paper could make me tear up… Funny how God places OUR dreams into the hearts of our children. At 8yrs old, Wesley is our youngest son, he’s been asking for a baby sister since he could talk. He loved to give tender kisses to all the babies I cared for when he was a toddler. He falls in love with every little one he meets – & I’m always amazed at how quickly they fall in love with him too! Such a sweet & gentle boy. (When he’s not being wild & dangerous! Ha!)
The update on our ‘slow to start’ China adoption journey is this: We are looking for the ‘right one’ at the moment. When we find her, it will be another 8-15 months before we can go & bring her home. Certainly the Lord has already chosen our daughter… we simply trust Him & wait until He shows us when & how to make our move! We’ve learned to wait on God, He always shows us His will & His way to get things done… We shall keep you all posted if anything exciting happens! 🙂 Until then, we remain very focused on our daily lives in this big city full of people that we have yet to meet. Read on…
Living in a city where so many have never thought twice about throwing money at their problems… makes me thankful for all the times we learned to trust in Jesus when we had nothing else… Some people have never had that opportunity & the blessing of learning to trust Him so much. I pray often for the wisdom & God’s vision for reaching those folks, the ones that have all the money & none of the hope. There has to be a way to show them Heaven’s love & hope that money simply cannot buy.
These were my thoughts while looking @ local bookstores for “the Tale of the Three Trees”, our gift for a young family living in poverty in the Sub-Divided-Apartment community that we visit weekly… It’s one of our family’s favorite stories & it has beautiful pictures. We’re praying it will bring joy & the love of Jesus to this little immigrant family. They may not have any other presents this Christmas, this one will show them the real meaning of this season! Are there people around you that may need help this Christmas? Is there someone that you could bless? The bible encourages us all to take care of the poor, the orphans & the widows.
What are you asking God for? He is faithful to show us His plans & purposes for our lives, just like in the Tale of the Three Trees…

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” -James 1:27

finding Courage to {be transformed} {pray}

“… so your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you…”

A woman stands lost in a crowd, unseen & afraid. No one can hear her pounding heart, they don’t know her pain. Walking through the masses, she finds herself searching for something she’s never known. Busy people rushing past, in their fancy suits & 5 inch heals… do they even notice as she begins to cry, right there in the intersection? Clutching her bundle of boxes, she’s racing to gather more… later she will soak them to add to the weight before claiming the reward. Just as she sits to rest her failing & aching hips, a young man interrupts her thoughts of hopelessness… “M’goi PauPau!” {Please/Excuse Me Grandmother!} He’s handing her a rice box with a bowl of hot soup. He explains she should rest & eat it now while it’s hot. Tells her that Jesus loves her & He’s looking out for her. She offers a feeble smile of thanks, “Dou Jei! Dou Jei!” {Thank You! Thank You!} The old woman’s eyes lit up for a moment & the young man spots the slightest glimmer in them. Was that hope? Was it thanks? Maybe even a hint of love? She is grateful, just like every week. He says goodbye & he prays as he walks on to find the next lost & lonely soul, in need of a warm meal & a bright light of hope.
Last week, Tryston & I saw a van with a ‘vanity license plate’ – it read “IMPACTHK” – It really got us thinking! We sometimes wonder if the things we do make any impact here in Hong Kong at all… Our Tuesday nights are for the homeless & street folks. We see the same people every week, give them dinner, ask how they’ve been, tell them we love them & so does Jesus, etc. But they are always there the next day, nothing changes… Or does it? Do our efforts mean nothing? Is it really our job to cause any changes? Are the unseen blessings still a blessing? If a tree falls in the forest & no one hears it, DOES it make a sound after all??

The Lord reveals himself in new & mysterious ways all the time friends. Tonight I found His words new & fresh once again. He has promised that HE will build the house. The house of David & the House of the Lord Jesus His Son… We have a job & we do our job, but then God himself comes in & blesses it, bringing the increase & the power & salvation through Jesus! He alone builds it! … OK, so this is a reminder of what I already knew. So what’s the revelation then? That although we have done & continue to do the work faithfully & joyfully… & although we have never ceased to pray… we can, we SHOULD… find COURAGE to pray! When one prays with courage it is a POWERFUL & CONFIDENT kind of prayer! Not a defeated, tired or withering prayer. Not a “if it’s not Your will” kind of prayer. NO! No more!

We are called to be COURAGEOUS PRAYER WARRIORS!!! So as for me & my house, we will STAND & PRAY WITH NEW FOUND COURAGE & BOLDNESS before the throne of God Almighty who sits waiting for our petition & praise! When we renew our mind, we will be transformed, then we’ll know that He is Lord. KNOWING that, we’ll find peace! Then, we’ll have courage to PRAY!  May we get up every time we fall… may we encourage ourselves in the Lord & never take our eyes off of the One who is building with & for us! May we be brave in finding courage to be transformed & pray!

“And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, so that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established in your sight.Lord Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign Lord, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.” ~2 Samuel 7:25-29

“And now, Lord, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you. You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. You, Lord, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant.” ~1 Chronicles 17:23-26

see a Need ~ fill a Need

As follower’s of Christ, it’s imperative to fill a need when we see one.

Today I took 4 of the elderly from their subdivided/cubicle home to the Housing Authority in Lok Fu.  I went there last week for them, but documents were missing.  So I decided to take all of them with me and have everything done in one shot.  But I keep reminding to continue to look for a place in the meanwhile because of the long wait (3+ yrs) for public housing in HK… When we were done, I took them out to lunch.

God is so good that He allows us to make a difference in this city, reaching His people 1 by 1…  So that they know the great God that we serve & the hope we can all have in Jesus!

Please join us in prayer for these friends & the thousands more that live in the cage & divided homes, & various other difficult housing situations here in Hong Kong.

If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? ~James 2:16

DON’T LEAVE me daddy!

These are things I feared as a child & now have come to fear even more as a mother of three boys… in Hong Kong. The very thought of one of my boys being lost, scared & alone anywhere… much less a foreign city of 7 million fast paced people, few of which speak enough English to understand a young child… just rips through all my facades & shows my true colors!!! So much so that we have prayed through this concern & very real possibility & then we have put in place a safety plan.

Joseph giving an elderly homeless person a hot dinner & a blessing in Cantonese: 耶穌愛你 = “Jesus loves you!”

Last week, we almost had to test that plan. All 6 of us (including our house guest for the month, Stephani) went out to serve the homeless near Mark’s office. On the way there, we were rushing from one subway train to catch another across the platform. 4 of us made it on the train, I was almost in when the doors closed ON ME & I had to back out… As I did, I bumped into my precious 8 year old son, Joseph… I was stunned, instantly realizing that he had almost been LEFT ALONE on that platform with about 1,000 strangers & very far from home. I grabbed him & held him tight as we both watched our family leaving through the windows of the fast train… Once it was gone, Joey began sobbing & buried his face in my shirt. I knew that feeling overtaking him. I was feeling it too… SO CLOSE. TOO CLOSE! It became so much more real, the likelihood of being LOST in this foreign place. All I could do to comfort him was to tell him I was with him & that God hadn’t let Mommy get on the train, instead, God had protected Joe by keeping Mommy with him!!! Then we went over THE PLAN again (reminding him that God will NEVER leave him, even if Mom HAD got on the train!) as we waited for the next train & I texted Mark so he would know where we’d meet up with the rest of them.

Before moving here, we would take our kids to the California State Fair every year. We’d repeat the same talk we gave at Disney Land… “YOU are never LOST because you always know where YOU are – but if you can’t find MOM & DAD here’s the PLAN…” – You know the drill, stay put & look for a safe person to talk to. An employee with a name tag. A Police Officer. Or last resort, a Mommy with kids around. No strange men, no other strangers, no wandering off to find someone’s puppy!!! Right??

So what’s the plan in HK? 7 million people. No name tags. Very little English. LOTS of strangers. Lots of men… Well, to start our little ones have Dad’s business card on them most of the time (which is in Eng. & Cantonese). The second half of the plan is to STAY PUT!!! FREEZE!!! Because in a city like this where everyone is moving, the only way to find you is for someone to retrace their steps to the last place they HAD you. Only if you can SEE a “safe” person to ask for help are you to move! (Obviously we hope they will not freeze in the middle of the street. *grin*) But even then, stay very close so we can come back for you!

I believe all of us have felt that deepest of fears before. Fear of being left all alone, in a world that is often unkind & unforgiving. Even in your home town, you may feel everything around you is foreign… It is! We were not created to live in this fallen world. We are not OF this world friends! — I know I have had many moments in my life where I have felt like saying “Don’t leave me Daddy!!”… And I had TWO Daddies! But neither of them could be there always. Neither could save me from myself or from the world that closed in on me… I was very lost! — So how do we get “HOME”?? After all my years of striving to do everything on my own & do it right, or at least do the wrong things well enough to get noticed… I finally discovered the only Father who will never leave me. God loves each of us so perfectly & so completely, more than any earthly father & His love will never fail. He will never leave us alone. With God, we are never lost or forsaken. There are days though, that you simply need to KNOW THE PLAN of how to get back on track when you lose your way. I am here to tell you friends, JESUS IS THE PLAN. He is the truth, the life & the way – straight into the arms of your Heavenly Father who loves you!

The guys enjoying Yu-Don (fish balls) on our outing!

If you ever want to know how Mark & I found our way through Jesus, ASK! We are more than happy to share our stories… & we are praying for your journey as well! Be blessed my friends & remember to talk to your kids about THE PLAN. Both a safety net for getting separated from Mom/Dad… & how they can always get back to God through Jesus! He’s always ready to lead us to our Father God – & right now is a good time!

“Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life:

no man comes unto the Father, but by me.” -John 14:6
